Welcome to the world of the girl child, promising yet gloomy, hopeful, yet in despair.
The handthat rocks the cradle, the procreator, the mother of tomorrow; a woman
shapes the destiny of civilization. Such is the tragic irony of fate, that a beautiful
creation such as the girl child is today one of the gravest concerns facing humanity
with a volley of summits, conferences and events held for the cause, with topmost
 world leaders at the helm.

Traditions and rituals outline the existence of the Indian girl child. Amidst uproars
of gender equality and law enforcement, female infants are still found dumped in
trash, by the dozens, while unborn fetuses continue to be sniffed in the womb.
Wrought with discrimination and prejudiced by rituals, our society has dealt the
girl child a rough hand, starting even before birth, till the dark of life.

At www.savegirlchild.orgwe show you the world from the eyes of a girl childbright
but unprivileged, twinkle in the eye, but remorse in the spirit; the Indian girl child,
a picture of dismay. Save  Girl Child is a social endeavor under the auspices of The Organization
for Eradication of Illiteracy and Poverty  www.educatenow.org

ANTI-SLAVERY INTERNATIONAL AND CHILD LABOUR

Anti-Slavery International has worked on child labour since the early 1900s. We have been systematically working on child labour issues since the 1970s, mainly in research and international advocacy.  Relevant ILO and UN standards underpin all Anti-Slavery International's work on child labour. We work collaboratively with other NGOs, inter-governmental bodies and trade unions, and focus on the worst forms of child labour and slavery-like practices.

Anti-Slavery International currently works in partnership with local NGO partners:

  • Campaigning to end forced child begging of talibé children in Senegal, West Africa. Talibés are mostly boys as young as five who are sent to daaras (Koranic schools), usually far from home, and who are forced to beg for several hours every day for their keep. They may be verbally or physically abused if they do not meet the targets set by the Koranic masters. Recent estimates put the number of talibé boys on Senegal’s streets at 50,000. We are working with local NGOs to: raise awareness among families in local communities about the risks to their children of sending them away to daaras and empowering them to help end the practice and campaign for alternatives; lobby the Government of Senegal to do more to protect these children and ultimately ensure they are given a more rounded education in properly regulated schools nearer their homes; and raise the issue internationally, at the UN and elsewhere, to put more pressure on the Government to do this.

  • Protecting child domestic workers from abuse and exploitation in six countries (Peru, Costa Rica, Philippines, India, Togo and Tanzania) through partnerships with local NGOs.  This involves: conducting research on the psychosocial impact of domestic work; assisting and supporting groups of child domestic workers through a small grants scheme;  and advocacy work at local, national and international levels to raise awareness about the situation of child domestic workers, strengthen actions that support them and influence law making processes

  • Monitoring the implementation of legislation in Gulf States prohibiting the trafficking and use of under 18 year-olds as camel jockeys, and the prosecution of those involved.

  • Increasing understanding and raising awareness of other issues, including children in the cocoa industry, child marriage and children in the armed forces.

The boycott Sri Lanka campaign

The boycott Sri Lanka campaign picked up momentum as the organisers this time selected their venue as Marina Beach on Saturday evening. It was a signature campaign.

Earlier a boycott Sri Lanka campaign went on for a day successfully in the busy Express avenue where many multi national shops were located. This campaign at Marina specifically targeted tourists and beach goers at Chennai. Marina beach is one of the beautiful and long beaches in the world. Many western tourists who visit Sri Lanka land in Chennai on transit. Therefore the campaign at Marina beach is expected to target such tourists who shall have a second thought on visiting and purchases in Sri Lanka.

After the telecast of Channel 4 footage of war crime evidences the people in India are now well informed about the crimes committed by the Sri Lankan army on unarmed Tamil civilians. Therefore the people who visited the beach eagerly came forward to post their signatures on the board. Considering this as an international issue many signed in English for taking this message to the world.

People of all ages from children to senior citizens turned up and appreciated the young men and women who stood on roads and beach sand in this campaign with placards and banners.

It was a passionate campaign, apart from putting signature the people promised by words ‘ We will never encourage flying Sri Lanka air services and cricket”. Children said “We will not watch the Sri Lanka cricket even in television”

One of the significant scene was that a group of Hindi speaking tourists from North India participated in this campaign with genuine interest.

Encouraged by the large turn out of people in this occasion the organisers plan to take forward this campaign to the Capital New Delhi and other metro cities.

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Child labour - India's 'cheap commodity'

Child labour - India's 'cheap commodity'

By Navdip Dhariwal
BBC News, Tamil Nadu

Campaigners say that many children work in appalling conditions

Farm workers toil long hours in the fields in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu for little reward in the intense heat.

But it is often their only means of survival.

Cheap labour is one commodity India has in abundance.

Hidden from public view though, is another workforce.

In an isolated spot, miles from the nearest town, is a thriving matchstick industry.

Here inside makeshift straw huts - and in the small dwellings that neighbour them - we found some of India's youngest workers.

Rows of exhausted young girls - up to 20 and as young as five are working alongside their mothers.

For 16 hours a day their tiny blistered fingers skilfully turn out matches for export.

Ordered to leave

The toxic smell of sulphur is overwhelming in the windowless room.

CHILD LABOUR 2006
218m aged 5-17 in work
126m in hazardous work
Almost 50m work in Africa
122m work in Asia
70% of workers in agriculture
Estimated cost of ending child labour: $760m over 20 years
Source: International Labour Organisation

Most computers will open PDF documents automatically, but you may need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader

Twelve-year-old Sindhu dips the tips of the sticks into hot sulphur.

"I start work early but don't finish until late into the night. I get paid less than two dollars a week."

Our presence was clearly not welcome. As we were speaking to the girls the owner came in and ordered us to leave.

Within walking distance are other factories. But again, when we arrived, the youngest workers were quickly led away.

While the factory owner denied he was employing underage workers, almost every single household in this part of Tamil Nadu has one or more children working long hours in appalling conditions.

Campaigners say over 11 million children are forced to work in India.

Lighting a fire for a rare family meal, Sarojama gathers her five grandchildren around her.

Exploited

She has barely been able to feed them, so she was forced to borrow money from a local factory owner.

Child worker in Indian match factory
Campaigners say over 11 million children work in India

Unable to pay back the loan she sent her young grand-daughter to work. Parimeeta was taken out of school and has been working 12 hour days for two years.

The debt is less than $20.

Campaigners fear that as India's economy continues to boom, children are increasingly being exploited to meet the country's hunger for global success.

In a recent raid in the capital Delhi, police rescued a large number of boys from local sweatshops.

Agents had lured them from India's poorest regions, promising the children that they would be taken care of and paid well.

They were found hidden on the top floors of garment factories - held captive in filthy cramped rooms under lock and key.

They painstakingly spent hours applying crystals to garments. Many of the clothes end up being sold in shops in the UK.

Ineffective

These are places the authorities say are difficult to close down.

But Swami Agnivesh of the Bonded Liberation Front says that hundreds of children are kept hidden from public view in the buildings of crammed alleyways.

"They are kept in the most appalling conditions and not enough is being done to help them," he said.

India has laws in place to protect children and bans the use of young workers, but they remain pretty ineffective.

The United Nations Children's' Fund says that the sheer volume of children engaged in work is living proof of the world's failure to protect them.

That is the reason why the agency's work is focused on building a protective environment which safeguards children from exploitation and abuse.

In Tamil Nadu local charities have helped pay off families' debts so that at least some children can be released from the matchstick factories.

Finally freed from the shackles of work, they now have some hope of reliving their childhood.

Bu it is often a dream that is short-lived.

Charity workers admit most of the children are likely to find themselves forced back into a life of bondage.

List of NGOs you can complain too if you see child labor ...

NGOs working on the issue of Child Labour:

· MV Foundation’s approach is based on a firm conviction that no child works and that all children in the 5-14 years age group must be in school. In other words it recognizes the inextricable link between the program for universalisation of education and abolition of all forms of child labour.

· It follows an‘area-based approach’ as against a target based approach. It seeks to address the rights of the entire universe of children- both in school and out of school- in the 5-14 years age group in its area of operation.

Brief profile :

· The Concerned for Working Children (CWC) is a non-profit organization based in Bangalore, India that has become known internationally for its work in empowering children to become the key protagonists in solving their own problems. While eradication ofchild labour remains the key focus of CWC, the organisation actively works with many of the surrounding issues such as children's rights, gender equality, community development, education and advocacy. Founded in 1985, it has organised Bhima Sangha, a union of and for working children that now has 20,000 members, and launched the National Movement of Working Children. Internationally, it co-founded the International Working Group on Child Labour (IWGCL), and CWC child delegates have contributed to ILO (International Labour Organization) conferences on child labour.

· CWC believes that given political and social space, marginalised children could become protagonists of their own change. With the support of the Concerned for Working Children, active participation of children in understanding problems that affect them and in devising appropriate solutions, has led to the creation of 'Makkala Panchayats' (Children's Village Governing Bodies) in many parts of Karnataka.

· CWC is playing a part in international research into children's mobility issues, with agreement on greater involvement of children in all aspects of this research project.

· CWC receives funding support from a Norwegian charity[2].
